Orofacial pain specialist, researcher, and educator. Professor, Department of Diagnostic Sciences, Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Dentistry, New Orleans. Director, LSU Orofacial Pain Continuum — a comprehensive postgraduate continuing education program in orofacial pain for practicing clinicians. Formerly Assistant Professor and Director of the Oral Medicine/Orofacial Pain Clinic, University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Dentistry (2005–2011). Prior to academic medicine: 22 years of general dental practice from both public health and private practice perspectives (1980–2002).
Author and co-author of 80+ peer-reviewed publications in orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, burning mouth syndrome, and headache. Author of 25+ book chapters in leading dental and pain medicine textbooks. Contributor to the Merck/MSD Manual (Professional Edition) on orofacial pain. Co-editor of three landmark reference texts: Orofacial Pain: Guidelines for Assessment, Diagnosis, and Management (AAOP, 7th edition, Quintessence, 2023); Manual of Temporomandibular Disorders (Wiley-Blackwell); and Temporomandibular Disorders: A Translational Approach from Basic Science to Clinical Applicability. Associate editor and editorial reviewer for multiple journals in dentistry and pain medicine.
