Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums that can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports the teeth. It is caused by bacteria constantly forming a transparent and sticky film on the teeth. If you don't remove it daily by brushing and flossing, plaque builds up and bacteria can infect not only the superficial gums and teeth, but also the gum tissue and bone that support the teeth. This can be a cause for teeth to loosen, fall out, or ultimately have to be removed by the dentist.
