Основное назначение фотографии в стоматологии - документация. Цель состоит в том, чтобы собрать как можно больше информации. Для этого необходимо стандартизировать используемую камеру, ее настройки и формат. При выборе стандартных режимов фотографии, даже если они сделаны с большими интервалами и разными фотографами, будут весьма похожими. Только в этой форме стоматологическая фотография может быть использована как ценная документальная помощь.

Стандарты, описанные Вольфгангом Бенгелем в 1985 году, остаются в силе, но их необходимо будет обновить и адаптировать к техническим инновациям.
