One of the most experienced and distinguished implant surgeons in the world with over 35 years of surgical experience.
Pioneer of Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR), performing the first GBR surgery at the University of Bern in October 1988. Co-developer of the SLA (sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched) micro-rough implant surface with Straumann, revolutionizing osseointegration and becoming the gold standard surface worldwide. Expert in bone regeneration procedures, simultaneous and staged GBR with implant placement, immediate and delayed post-extraction implant protocols, and management of aesthetic zone implant cases. Research focuses on translational research in implant dentistry, GBR materials and techniques, implant surface modifications, peri-implantitis prevention, and long-term outcomes of regenerative procedures.
Former President of the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO, 1996-1997) and International Team for Implantology (ITI, 2009-2013). Recipient of numerous prestigious awards including André Schroeder Research Prize from ITI (1995), Daniel M. Laskin Award (1996), Honorary Membership Award from American Academy of Periodontology (1997), Brånemark Osseointegration Award from Academy of Osseointegration (2013), and ITI Honorary Fellowship (2017). Editor and principal author of the famous "GBR Book" published by Quintessence (3rd edition, November 2021), the definitive reference on guided bone regeneration translated into multiple languages. Author and co-author of over 400 publications and book chapters in peer-reviewed journals. International lecturer having presented over 1,000 lectures worldwide on GBR techniques, implant surface technology, and evidence-based implant surgery. Mission of the Buser & Sculean Academy is global knowledge sharing with the young generation of implant specialists using high-quality streaming technology.
