Regents Professor and Peter H. Buschang Endowed Professor of Orthodontics at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry (formerly Baylor College of Dentistry), Dallas, Texas. Director of Orthodontic Research at Texas A&M College of Dentistry (since 1988). Adjunct Professor at Jacksonville University School of Orthodontics. One of the most distinguished orthodontic researchers in the world with expertise in craniofacial growth, biomechanics, and developmental adaptations.
Over 44 years of combined research, teaching, and academic experience in orthodontics and craniofacial biology. Expert in craniofacial growth patterns and prediction, developmental adaptations to orthodontic and orthopedic treatments, biomechanical principles in tooth movement, oral-motor function, and masticatory efficiency. Research focuses on understanding how orthodontic forces affect tooth movement and periodontal tissues, optimal force systems for different tooth movements, and relationships between craniofacial morphology and function.
Author of over 260 peer-reviewed publications in leading orthodontic journals making him one of the most prolific researchers in the specialty. Author of numerous book chapters and several influential textbooks on orthodontic research methodology and craniofacial growth. Associate Editor for multiple orthodontic journals including American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Angle Orthodontist, and Orthodontics & Craniofacial Research. International lecturer having delivered over 130 invited presentations and workshops at major orthodontic conferences worldwide. Recipient of numerous research awards from orthodontic organizations. The Peter H. Buschang Endowed Professorship in Orthodontics was established in his honor at Texas A&M recognizing his extraordinary contributions to orthodontic education and research.
BA in Anthropology from University of Texas at Austin. PhD in Physical Anthropology from University of Texas at Austin (1980). NIDR (National Institute of Dental Research) Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Orthodontics at University of Connecticut Health Science Center (1980-1983). FRSQ (Fonds de la Recherche en Santé du Québec) Scholar in the Orthodontic Section and Human Growth Research Center at Université de Montréal (1983-1988). Faculty member at Texas A&M College of Dentistry since 1988.
Creator and Developer of the Pitts21 and H4 self-ligating bracket systems. Visiting Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, University of the Pacific, San Francisco, California. Pioneer of the "Smile Arc Protection" (SAP) treatment philosophy and high bracket placement strategy. Owner and Orthodontist at Pitts Orthodontics, Reno, Nevada (since 1970, taken over from his father and practicing since approximately 1990s).
Over 30 years of clinical experience developing and refining innovative bracket systems and biomechanical protocols that prioritize facial aesthetics alongside functional occlusion. Creator of the Smile Arc Protection strategy, a revolutionary approach that emphasizes aesthetic bracket positioning and early control of smile arc relationships rather than reactive adjustments at treatment completion. Developer of the Pitts21 bracket system featuring unique 0.021" × 0.021" square slot design, progressive slot depth, and early 3D control capabilities (torque, tip, rotation) from initial bonding. Innovator of treatment protocols including ELSE (Early, Light, Short Elastics) and Active Early mechanics that promote efficient tooth movement with square wire finishing and lighter forces.
Founder of the Progressive Study Club, a well-respected international study group. International lecturer presenting extensively throughout United States, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and worldwide on topics including self-ligating bracket biomechanics, Smile Arc Protection protocols, TADs (temporary anchorage devices) integration with self-ligating systems, treatment of Class II/III malocclusions and open bites, VDO management in orthodontic patients, and aesthetic bracket positioning strategies. Author of numerous publications on bracket placement protocols, self-ligating mechanics, and aesthetic-driven treatment planning. Mentor to hundreds of orthodontists worldwide through the Pitts Masters Program, producing graduates recognized among the world's top orthodontists for aesthetic treatment outcomes. Graduated valedictorian from dental school. Considered a leading authority on advanced orthodontic technology and biomechanical innovation in aesthetic orthodontics.
DDS from University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry (valedictorian). MS (Master of Science) in Orthodontics from University of Washington, Seattle. Visiting Clinical Professor appointment at University of the Pacific.
Dr. Kokich Jr. earned his dental degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1996 and completed a general practice residency at the University of Washington Medical Center. He remained at the University of Washington for his orthodontic training where he obtained his Masters in Orthodontics in 1999. He has continued his involvement at the University as a guest lecturer in the Department of Orthodontics, while also maintaining a private practice in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Kokich is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontists and a member of the Angle Society and the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. He was honored to receive the Charles L. Pincus Research Award for Clinical Research from the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. He has written or co-written four book chapters as well as numerous scientific and review articles, and his current research and publications focus on esthetic, interdisciplinary dentistry. Dr. Kokich Jr. has given over 250 lectures nationally and internationally, sharing his interest in interdisciplinary dentistry and dental esthetics, emphasizing comprehensive treatment planning and the importance of coordinating orthodontic, periodontal, and restorative care.
Specialist in orthodontics with focus on passive self-ligation (PSL) techniques and the Damon System philosophy. Professor of Orthodontics at Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, Tijuana, Mexico.
