Former Executive Director of School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern. Past President of European Federation of Periodontology (EFP, 2018-2019). Current President of International Academy of Periodontology (IAP).
Over 35 years of clinical and academic experience in periodontology and regenerative medicine. Recognized internationally as one of the world's leading authorities in periodontal regeneration, plastic-esthetic periodontal surgery, and treatment of peri-implant infections. Research focus on periodontal wound healing and regeneration, enamel matrix derivatives, growth factors, lasers and photodynamic therapy in treatment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases, and novel regenerative approaches. Director of numerous multi-center randomized controlled clinical trials establishing evidence-based protocols for periodontal regeneration.
International lecturer having delivered over 600 presentations at national and international conferences worldwide. Past President of Periodontal Research Group of International Association for Dental Research (IADR, 2009-2010). Past President of Swiss Society of Periodontology (SSP). Editor-in-Chief of Oral Health and Preventive Dentistry. Associate Editor of Quintessence International and Clinical Oral Investigations. Section Editor of BMC Oral Health. Editorial board member of multiple leading periodontal journals.
DMD. Dr. med. Dent. MS. PhD. Diplomate of the European Federation of Periodontology. Specialist in Periodontology certified in Romania (1999). Board Certified Specialist in Periodontology in Switzerland. Published over 510 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals with extensive citation record establishing him among most cited periodontists globally. Authored over 40 chapters in periodontal textbooks. Recipient of numerous research awards from European and American periodontal societies. Member of multiple professional organizations including American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), and International Association for Dental Research (IADR). Maintains part-time private practice limited to periodontology and implant dentistry in Bern.
