The application of micro-implants (MI) in orthodontics can be extremely versatile. Often, we consider them as mere anchorage devices; however, creative use of micro-implants can provide many treatment modalities which were not possible with the traditional orthodontic approach. This course will provide an overview of their common usage and further explore the novel treatment protocols including orthopedic corrections and other extreme clinical cases.
The latest findings from the UCLA research team will be presented in order to enhance the depth of understanding in biomechanics related to utilization of MI. The newest development in MI design will be illustrated in detail as well.

WORKSHOP (March 21)
A. Micro-Implant Placement and Activation Hands-on Workshop
This workshop is for those who seek knowledge in the basic micro-implant placement, activation and biomechanics, and removal through hands-on experience. A PowerPoint presentation of materials and methods will be presented followed by a live demonstration, before the hands-on practice. The following items will be covered during this workshop.
1. Proper Use of the Tools
2. Insertion Sights of Micro-Implants
3. Implant Selection
4. Insertion Technique
5. Activation Technique and Biomechanics
6. Managing Adverse Side-Effects
7. Retrieving Broken Implants
Required supplies: typodont, micro-implants, drivers, orthodontic pliers, power chains, ligature ties, etc. for all participants and instructor.
B. MSE Hands-on Workshop
This workshop is for those who took the basic MSE course in the past and want to have a hands-on experience. The following will be covered during this workshop.
Part I: MSE fabrication, Lab Work:
A proper MSE fabrication will be illustrated on a typodont. A PowerPoint presentation of materials and methods will be presented followed by a live demonstration, before the hands-on practice of the laboratory process.
1. Overview of MSE fabrication
2. Proper placement of MSE on the typodont made with synthetic bone
3. Proper Contouring the supporting arms
Required supplies: New MSE, Orthodontic Pliers (Weingart, Birdbeak, Three Prong, etc.), and typodont that splits for all participants and instructor.
Part II: MSE insertion, activation and removal; Clinical Simulation:
A proper MSE delivery, activation, and removal will be simulated on typodont with a prefabricated MSE in place. A PowerPoint presentation of materials and methods will be presented followed by a live demonstration, before the hands-on practice on the typodont.
1. Clinical tips through case studies
2. Placing prefabricated MSE onto the typodont
3. Inserting Micro-Implants into the synthetic bone using both mini-hand-driver and Ratchet Wrench
4. MSE Activation
5. Removing Micro-Implants with the min-hand-driver
Required supplies: Prefabricated MSE, typodont (same as in Part I), and MSE tools from the MSE kit (hand-driver, ratchet wrench, activation key) for all participants and instructor.
