ENDODONTICS
The 8 webinar
course
OF THE CONGRESS
The idea of the online course - Algorhythms of clinical decision making in endodontics.
What is special about the online course?
- Lecturers will teach you how to apply their clinical way of thinking for decision-making in daily endodontic practice!
You will learn what particular decisions did a lecturer make on each stage of his endodontic treatment. What result was he expecting? Why did he expect this particular result? What result did he eventually get?
The doctors prepared their reports to show you their stream of thought in making of the most important clinical decisions!

From traumatic injuries to root resorption, passing through big decay and loss of sound tissue, the endodontic treatment can represent a very difficult step (both orthograde or surgical ones) in achieving a long-lasting success. The better the coordination among other disciplines the longer the tooth will survive in function.
Reconstruction of endodontically treated teeth need a deep assessment in order to return to a proper function and undergo to a long lasting biomechanical stress. From endodontic cavity preparation to the evaluation of remaining tooth structure, the clinician must follow simple but mandatory rules to achieve a predictable success.
- Treatment plan and clinical decisions when facing a
compromised tooth
- Traumatic injuries: classification and guidelines
Managing of deep decays before the endodontic
treatment
- Timing of surgical and orthograde interventions
- The importance of the Teamwork and coordination
among the various specialities
- Long time control cases and final conclusions

Endodontic treatment is a highly efficient manipulation. Experienced clinicians can reach success in 90% of cases and even more. Unfortunately, our colleagues fell into the impression that if a doctor “follows a protocol” and observes all “rules, then his success is assured. At the same time it means the doctor missed something if the process is persistent. Failure is the same expected result of the treatment as well as rehabilitation. The author will main causes of failure in a series of his own clinical cases, will analyze them backed by scientific literature and discuss possible solutions with the audience.
- Definition of success and failure in endodontics and apical surgery
- Failures related to the general health of the patient
- Failures associated with microbial factor and localization of infection
- Failures associated with restoration
- Failures associated with periodontal status

Buchanan
- Using navigation in endodontics:
- to direct endodontic access through calcified pulp chambers
- to locate root apicies during endodontic surgery
- The use of high-tech irrigation procedures for the preparation and subsequent obturation of small root canals
From the lecturer:
Innovation often presents in two forms: (1) incremental; and, (2) disruptive. Inflection points present when the fundamentals of a market begin to shift, and unique, disruptive technology intersects with an underserved or unserved market. CBCT imaging, 3D visualization, dynamic CT-guided navigation, and new irrigation techniques are four disruptive technologies that are improving the ability to diagnose, visualize, and treat patients in need of root canal therapy.
About the lecturer:
Dr. Buchanan received his dental degree in 1978 from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, San Francisco, CA, where he was Valedictorian of his class. In 1980 he completed the endodontic graduate program at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.
He began pursuing three-dimensional anatomy research early in his career. In 1986, he became the first person in dentistry to use micro-computed tomography technology to show the intricacies of root structure.
In 1989, he established Dental Education Laboratories (DEL) a state-of- the-art training facility devoted to hands-on instruction where he teaches endodontic treatment, retreatment and segmented file retrieval. In addition to hands-on training courses at the DEL campus in Santa Barbara, California, Dr. Buchanan is a frequent guest lecturer and live demonstration presenter for the ADA, AAE, AAED, AGD as well as for numerous dental societies around the world. He is a regular contributor to Dentistry Today and various endodontic journals as well as a contributing author to Pathways of the Pulp. Early in his career, Dr. Buchanan identified the power of video and film media in training, and produced the award-winning video series, The Art of Endodontics.
Dr. Buchanan holds a number of patents for dental instruments and techniques. Most notably, he was the first to introduce variable-tapered instruments for use in endodontic therapy and pioneered a system-based approach to treating root canals.
Dr. Buchanan’s most recent work in hands-on training is the development of 3D printed surgical training replicas: TrueTooth™ and TrueJaw®. These 3D printed replicas are anatomically precise human teeth and jaws– perfect for teaching endodontic therapy, implantology, prosthodontics and general restorative procedures. TrueTooth™ and TrueJaw® radiograph accurately with 2D and 3D imaging. TrueJaw® replicas have separately segmented cortical and trabecular bone, periodontal ligaments, and gingiva tissues with elastic PDL’s, providing a life-like oral surgery procedure experience. TrueJaw® and TrueTooth™ are produced and sold by Dr. Buchanan’s research and development company, Dental Engineering Laboratories, LLC.
Dr. Buchanan is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and a Fellow of the International and American Colleges of Dentists. He currently serves as Clinical Guest Professor at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry and the University of California at Los Angeles School of Dentistry, and as Guest Lecturer, Loma Linda University School of Dentistry.
Dr. Buchanan maintains a full-time private practice limited to endodontics and implantology in Santa Barbara, California, USA.

Abstract:
Dental caries remains a global public health burden as 44% of all people worldwide is suffering from untreated caries in primary and permanent teeth. Caries is today regarded as a preventable non-communicable disease (NCD), sharing similar biological, behavioral, socioeconomic and lifestyle risk factors with other NCD’s within the metabolic syndrome. Therefore, caries should be subjected to a similar model of chronic disease management. Caries prevention has traditionally relied on fluoride exposure, diet control, proper oral hygiene and antibacterial agents. Prevention of caries as a NCD does certainly not disqualify these methods but bring them into a new context. The lecture will give a brief overview on how these preventive measures can interfere with the drivers of dysbiosis and promote the growth of health-associated clusters in the oral microbiome. Besides the established routines of regular tooth brushing with fluoride products and fluoride varnish applications, there is an opportunity for additional technologies based on ecological principles to address and modify the oral biofilm. Methods to reduce dietary sugar, slow down plaque metabolism and support saliva functions should be further developed and investigated in terms of efficacy, compliance and cost-effectiveness.
Learning objective:
- To understand and embrace the 4D-loop (Determine, Detect, Decide and Do) for caries management and care in everyday practice.
- To practice evidence-based caries risk assessment, early caries detection, clinical decision-making followed by a personalized care plan for children.

Khayat
Considerable advancements have been made in the recent years in endodontic surgery. The operating microscope is now routinely used and new ultrasonic tips have been developed. These tips have radically changed our approach and enable us to perform procedures that are similar to conventional endodontics. Many teeth that are replaced by implant could be preserved with this technique. The presentation will evaluate the current literature on the outcome of endodontic surgery compared to conventional retreatment and will focus on the use of the new ultrasonic instruments.
At the end of the presentation, participants should be able to:
- evaluate the potential of endodontic surgery
- understand the use of the new ultrasonic instrument
- describe the concept of total surgical retreatment.
